SCEC Workshop on Dynamic Rupture and Stress Conditions

SUMMARY: The SCEC Dynamic Rupture Group is examining in detail the essential ingredients needed to understand earthquakes and produce viable large-earthquake source simulations. We focused on fault geometry at our November 2018 workshop. At our January 2020 workshop we focused on fault friction, and at our October 2020 workshop we focused on rock properties. Now we are having our fourth workshop in the series, and our focus is on stress conditions. We have invited speakers from both outside and inside our group to present ideas about stress conditions, what they look like in the Earth, and how our choices for stress conditions in our computational models affect rupture behavior and ground shaking.
Questions we hope to answer in this workshop include:
- How do our choices of stress conditions affect earthquake rupture behavior?
- How do our choices of stress conditions affect ground shaking?
- Are our stress conditions assumptions more or less important than our other ‘ingredients’, fault geometry, fault friction, and rock properties?
This workshop will be held as a Zoom meeting on December 3, 2021. The program will consist of some 10-15 minute presentations, with ample time for Q&A and discussion. The workshop closes with a moderated group discussion about SCEC Dynamic Rupture Group research activities. To promote active discussion, the workshop is limited to 60 participants and by invitation only.
