2019 SCEC Community Geodetic Model Workshop

SUMMARY: The most recent SCEC CGM workshop was held in March 2018 on future development of SCEC Community Geodetic Models (CGM). The goals of that workshop were as follows: (1) assess the current status of the CGM, including GNSS and InSAR products separately; (2) define key information needed to improve and/or develop the CGM, particularly the combination of GNSS and InSAR; (3) discuss how best to incorporate both formal uncertainties and differences between products into uncertainties associated with the final CGM products.
This full-day workshop, to be held in conjunction with the September 2019 SCEC Annual Meeting, will assess where current products stand relative to community needs, set goals and tasks for the upcoming year, and introduce the development of new product formats with a view to both ease of access to users as well as efficiency of storage for ever-increasing sizes of products. We will also address the response to and impact of the July 2019 Ridgecrest earthquakes on the CGM, using them as a case study in what pre-earthquake preparedness needs to be integrated into the CGM and how such products might be used by the community in response to future events. The tasks for the workshop are to reach consensus on the CGM Version 2 products, to be made available within the next six months, to refine and prioritize the identified action items, and to coordinate plans for submission of related SCEC 2020 proposals. The primary outcomes expected from the workshop are to develop a consensus for moving from a time-dependent to time-independent CGM over the next years, a set of recommendations for CGM products for earthquake preparedness and response of CGM mission, and plans for submission of coordinated and collaborative proposals in response to the 2020 SCEC RFP and other funding opportunities.
