2014 SCEC Post-Earthquake Rapid Scientific Response
Dates: September 7, 2014 (09:00 – 17:00)
Location: Hilton Palm Springs Resort, Palm Springs, CA
Conveners: Mike Oskin (UC Davis), Greg Beroza (Stanford), Tran Huynh (USC/SCEC)
SCEC Award and Report: 14185
We will convene a full-day workshop focused on defining problems and updating plans for SCEC post-earthquake rapid scientific response. The first objective of this workshop is to engage the SCEC research community on the scientific problems that need to be urgently addressed immediately following a major, surface-rupturing earthquake in southern California. The second objective is to enhance response coordination between academic researchers, the U.S. Geological Survey, the California Geological Survey, the Earthquake Information Clearinghouse, and other agencies such as Homeland Security, CalEMA, etc.
Session 1 (Morning) Scientific Objectives of Rapid Response: What sorts of data are most timely or ephemeral and must be collected immediately after an earthquake? What instrumentation would need to be deployed, and over what time frame? How might response differ depending on the size of the earthquake or its location? How will resources be secured to support the science objectives? Conclude with discussion and summary of research objectives and priorities for post-earthquake response.
Session 2 (Afternoon) Coordination Planning: How will various agencies respond to a major earthquake? What is the status of SCEC response planning? What efforts are needed to ensure communication and collaboration between SCEC, the USGS, the CGS, the Earthquake Information Clearinghouse, and other entities to achieve the best science outcomes? Conclude with discussion of actionable items for enhancing coordination for the next large earthquake in southern California.
