2005 Annual Meeting: Meeting of the Working Group on California Earthquake Probabilities

Meeting of the Working Group on California Earthquake Probabilities

Dates:  Sunday, September 11th, 8:00 pm
Location: SCEC Annual Meeting in Palm Springs, CA
Organizers: Chris Wills, California Geological Survey; Mark Petersen, U.S. Geological Survey

USGS and CGS will hold a meeting on fault parameters to be used in seismic shaking hazard evaluation in southern California. This meeting will focus on any updates or changes needed in the geometry or slip rates of faults needed since the 2002 National Seismic Hazard Maps. This information will be used in developing the next version of the maps, and by the new Working Group for California Earthquake Probabilities in developing a new time-dependant seismic shaking hazard model for all of California.

We would like to take the opportunity to introduce the new Working Group, and go over its general project plan and potential innovations that will come out of that effort. We would like to focus, and spend most of the discussion time, on making sure we are using appropriate geometric representations and fault slip rates in the models. We would also like your input on the development of a database, listing the locations where slip rates have been determined and giving the amount of offset and age of the offset feature, including uncertainties.
