ABOUT GRAND CHALLENGES INTERNS PROJECTS

Summary
The 2016 Grand Challenge given to the interns was to run physics-based earthquake simulators on Blue Waters supercomputer by the RSQsim rupture simulator to generate long catalogs of California seismic activity from the synthetic catalog statistics.They developed 10-year forecasts of large earthquakes (M≥7) on the southern San Andreas fault system (or well-defined part of this system)
  • Estimate the probability that more than one large earthquake will occur during intervals of one week, one month, or one year in the next 10 years
  • Compare these probabilities with the probability that one or more large earthquakes will occur in the next 10 years
  • Compare the simulation-based probabilities from the Uniform California Earthquake Rupture Forecast

Interns identified threatening multi-event scenarios that could threaten the Los Angeles region and illustrated them with hazard and risk maps.

Challenge Statement

Task: Use physics-based earthquake simulators running on high-performance computers to generate long catalogs of California seismic activity.

 		   Probability Team

Task: From the synthetic catalog statistics, develop 10-year forecasts of large earthquakes (magnitude ≥ 7) on the southern San Andreas fault system. Compare these simulator-based probabilities with the values given by the official Uniform California Earthquake Rupture Forecast.

Task: Produce a documentary on the UseIT program. Interview interns and key members of SCEC. Supplement the documentary with other documentary shorts and media communication and integration.
