UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES IN EARTHQUAKE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

ABOUT GRAND CHALLENGES INTERNS PROJECTS

Summary

The 2016 Grand Challenge given to the interns was to run physics-based earthquake simulators on Blue Waters supercomputer by the RSQsim rupture simulator to generate long catalogs of California seismic activity from the synthetic catalog statistics. They developed 10-year forecasts of large earthquakes (M≥7) on the southern San Andreas fault system (or well-defined part of this system)
  • Estimate the probability that more than one large earthquake will occur during intervals of one week, one month, or one year in the next 10 years
  • Compare these probabilities with the probability that one or more large earthquakes will occur in the next 10 years
  • Compare the simulation-based probabilities from the Uniform California Earthquake Rupture Forecast

Interns identified threatening multi-event scenarios that could threaten the Los Angeles region and illustrated them with hazard and risk maps.

Challenge Statement

Run physics-based earthquake simulators on a high-performance computer to generate long catalogs of California seismic activity from the synthetic catalog statistics, develop 10-year forecasts of large earthquakes (M ≥ 7) on the southern San Andreas fault system (or a well-defined part of this system), and identify threatening multi-event scenarios and illustrate them with hazard and risk maps

Intern Class of 2016

Project Teams

  HPC Development Team

Task: Use physics-based earthquake simulators running on high-performance computers to generate long catalogs of California seismic activity.

Members: Morgan Bent (Captain), Hernan Lopez (Documentation), Kevin Scroggins, Spencer Ortega, David Fu

Mentors: Scott CallaghanJacqui Gilchrist

  SCEC-VDO Development Team

Task: Visualize catalogs of California Seismic Activity

Team: Rory Norman (Captain), Patrick Vanderwall (CS rep), Emy Huang (Documentation), Kishan Rajasekhar, Allen Shi, Ralph Cervantes

Mentors: Kevin Milner, Sanskriti, John Yu

  Probability Team

Task: From the synthetic catalog statistics, develop 10-year forecasts of large earthquakes (magnitude ≥ 7) on the southern San Andreas fault system. Compare these simulator-based probabilities with the values given by the official Uniform California Earthquake Rupture Forecast.

Members: Brady Guan (Captain), Yipeng Li (Documentation), Daniel Ngu, Mingyan Zhou

Mentors: Kevin Milner, Jacqui Gilchrist

  Media Team

Task: Produce a documentary on the UseIT program. Interview interns and key members of SCEC. Supplement the documentary with other documentary shorts and media communication and integration.

Members: Emma Huibregtse, Geneva Burkhardt, Emily Olmos, Drew Welch, Aadit Doshi

Mentors: Jason Ballmann, Mark Benthien, Mark Romano

  HARVI Team

Task: Illustrate the most threatening multi-event scenarios with hazard and risk maps

Members: Sophia Belvoir, Vianca Rivas, Jenepher Zamora, Jadson da Silva Lima, Luis Gomez

Mentors: Mark Benthien, Kevin Milner, Hope Seligson
