CRESCENT CVM Topical Virtual Workshop, May 13-14

The CRESCENT Community Velocity Model (CVM) group is holding a topical workshop on the mornings of May 13 and 14, from 8am to 12pm. Our goals for this workshop are to update the community on CRESCENT CVM goals and broaden the participation of/interaction with the Cascadia-focused research community. This will be done through discussions on existing velocity models, velocity model creation workflows, model validation techniques, and uses of velocity models by various sub-disciplines and communities (e.g., ground motion modeling, geological interpretation, etc.) to further research agendas. We look to solicit feedback and create potential collaborations that can contribute to the success of the CRESCENT CVM by learning from prior experiences and better understanding community needs, uses, considerations, and potential pitfalls.

Tentative Agenda (Pacific Time)

Monday, May 13th
8am – 10:20am: Presentations: The present and future of CVM.
Speakers: Brad Aagaard, Pablo Canales, Shuoshuo Han, Sheri Molnar, Andrew Schaeffer, Jon Delph, Artie Rodgers
10:20 – 12pm: Community Input: Model Uses
Breakouts: User group CVM needs, Model work flow, considerations and usability

Tuesday, May 14th
8am – 9:10am: Tutorial on Earthscope Consortium x CRESCENT CVM tools
9:20am – 9:50am: Presentations: Model Merging and Validation
Speakers: Rasheed Ajala, Evan Hirakawa
10 – 10:50am: Community Input: Model Updating and Merging Needs
10:50 – 11:30: Discussion and Wrap-Up

If you are interested, please submit a registration form via this link by Monday, May 6th. We will provide a zoom link prior to the event to registered attendees.

Sincerely,

Gordon Research Conference/Gordon Research Seminar

Please consider applying to the Gordon Research Conference on Rock Deformation, which will be held from Aug.4th-9th, 2024 at Bates College, Lewiston, ME. This year’s GRC will focus on the timescales of deformation processes and include talks from experts in experimental rock deformation, structural geology, earthquake seismology, geodesy, geodynamics, glaciology, geomorphology, and metamorphic petrology. The deadline for applications is July 7th, 2024. For more information, please visit the Rock Deformation GRC website: https://www.grc.org/rock-deformation-conference/2024/

Directly before the GRC, the Gordon Research Seminar on Rock Deformation will take place from August 3rd-4th, 2024. The GRS is a forum for early career researchers (graduate students, post-docs) to share their research and build collaborative relationships with their peers. This year’s GRS will emphasize multidisciplinary approaches to addressing rock deformation across diverse settings and scales. It will also feature a career path mentoring session.  The deadline for applications to be considered for an oral presentation at the GRS is April 28th, 2024. The deadline for the general GRS applications are July 6th, 2024, and. The Seismology Skill Building Workshop Registration is officially open!

Please help share this FREE opportunity to learn introductory scientific computing and seismology with the community!

Are you looking to develop scientific computing skills while exploring the field of seismology?  This FREE introductory level workshop, now in its fifth year, seeks to increase your...

  •  Knowledge, skills, and interest in seismology and scientific computing,
  •  Self-efficacy in using seismic data, and
  •  Competitiveness in the application process for graduate school, summer internships, or professional jobs.

The geophysics skills developed in this workshop help prepare you for graduate school and rewarding careers across a range of career sectors including the federal & state governments, oil and gas, research institutes and national labs, environmental services, academia, etc.

Who: Undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates
When: June 10 to August 30, 2024.
Where: The workshop is offered online only.
How: Based on previous years, most students invest approximately 5-6 hours per week to participate in (or watch) the weekly webinar and complete assignments.
What: At the end of the workshop participants will receive a performance report/certificate via email.

The Seismology Skill Building Workshop is offered by the EarthScope Consortium (formerly IRIS) and Miami University

What past participants have said…

"Because the workshop was so well developed, the activities were interesting and well guided. The professors were always very helpful, and the communication was always good. Thanks!”

"This workshop was run fantastically and taught new concepts but was not set up in a way that was meant to be overly challenging or stress-inducing. Great for people with little coding experience, all info was built up from the base level.”

"Thought out and in-depth real-world exercises with guidance but room for learning and making mistakes.”
