Postdoctoral Fellowship to model induced seismicity on geometrically rough faults due to fluid injection
The Department of Geophysics, Stanford University seeks candidates for a Postdoctoral Fellowship to model induced seismicity on geometrically rough faults due to fluid injection. The work will build on modeling of coupled creep and seismicity on rough faults with rate and state dependent friction (Cattania and Segall, 2021, JGR). Modeling the effects of fluid injection will permit comparison of the simulated earthquakes with observations of induced earthquakes in areas such as Oklahoma. Research will be supervised by P. Segall and E. Dunham.
- Applicants should hold a PhD in Geophysics, mechanics, or related discipline with demonstrated competence in continuum modeling of faulting and seismicity, rate and state friction, and related mechanics.
Required Application Materials:
- Cover letter describing your relevant experience and publications, potential start date, and expected date of graduation (if PhD not yet awarded)
- Curriculum vitae
- Names and contact information of 2-3 referees
Send application to: segall@stanford.edu
Applications will be reviewed as they come in.
Stanford is an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.

Global & Computational Seismology Group, Colorado School of Mines: seeking postdoctoral researcher
SCOPED Post-Doctoral Fellow - Global & Computational Seismology Group, Colorado School of Mines is seeking postdoctoral researcher to work on passive-source full-waveform modeling, HPC/Cloud problems in seismology.
See the SCOPED team here: https://seisscoped.org/
JOB SUMMARY
Global & Computational Seismology group at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Colorado School of Mines, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work on large-scale full-waveform modeling of seismic data on high-performance computing and Cloud environments as part of the NSF funded SCOPED (Seismic COmputational Platform for Empowering Discovery) project. Potential projects are multi-scale full-waveform modeling of source and structure with passive sources (i.e., earthquake and ambient noise) and heterogeneous data types (i.e., from broadband instruments, DAS, MERMAIDs, etc.), optimizing full-waveform inversion workflows for large-scale HPC simulations and datasets (automatization of workflows, implementing machine learning algorithms, etc). The successful candidate’s responsibilities will involve both theoretical, method, and technical developments as well as applications of them to multi-scale seismic-modeling problems. The position is available immediately for a year with a potential extension of another year upon satisfactory progress. To apply for the position, please send a cover letter stating your background and research interests, a full CV including the publication list, and the contact information of two or three referees. Application reviews will be on a continuous basis until the position is filled. Questions and requests for further information about the position can be emailed to Prof. Ebru Bozdag (bozdag@mines.edu).
- Closing date: position is open until it is filled.
- Salary range: $50K-$65K

Green Foundation Postdoctoral Appointments in Geophysics
The Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego, has openings starting in 2024 for up to two postdoctoral Green Scholars. The PhD awarded to the applicant must have a date no earlier than 4 YEARS BEFORE the application deadline, and no later than 6 MONTHS AFTER it, though the 4-year limit may be extended up to one year to allow for parental leaves. The appointment cannot start until after the award of the PhD.
These positions are supported by funding from the Green Foundation for Earth Sciences, matched with extramural funds for specific research projects. Before submitting an application, applicants should contact potential IGPP mentors to find out if they have a suitable project. Green scholars are encouraged to broaden their experience through interaction with other researchers at IGPP; individual research goals may be pursued if project progress can be maintained. Information on recent IGPP research is available at https://igpp.ucsd.edu/about .
The positions are for one year, renewable for a second year subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds. Starting salary is $70,000/yr plus benefits, along with $3000/yr of discretionary research funds.
