POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS IN EARTH, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND CLIMATE SCIENCES – Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for Postdoctoral Fellowships in the fields of Earth, environmental, and climate sciences. 

Fellowships are supported institutionally for 24 months, include a $7,500 research allowance, and carry an annual salary of $66,000. Successful candidates will be encouraged to apply for external funding and may be eligible for further internal awards and positions. Lamont is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive culture. Candidates should have recently completed their Ph.D. or should expect to complete their degree requirements by September 2024.

Engineering Seismologist/Seismologist position at AECOM

AECOM is currently seeking an Engineering Seismologist/Seismologist to be located in Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Oakland C

Responsibilities include:

  • Work on seismic research projects and provide technical support to multidisciplinary teams on various projects. 
  • Analyze and review seismic data using advanced software tools and methodologies.
  • Develop and refine seismic hazard models for various regions.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate seismic data into broader geoscience studies.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements: 

  • BA/BS in geophysics, engineering, geology or related subject + 2 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of education and/or experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree and/or Ph.D. degree in geophysics, engineering, or geology highly preferred. 
  • Understanding of probabilistic seismic hazard analysis and have strong background in probability and statistics 
  • Experience in programming with Python or Matlab highly preferred. Additional programming experience in Fortran and/or C also desirable.  
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret procedures, regulations, and technical information.
  • Work independently or under minimum supervision. 
  • Understanding and knowledge of site response analysis and/or Tsunami hazards.
  • Understanding of seismic source and strong ground motion characteristics, e.g. stress drop and path parameters such as crustal attenuation and kappa.
  • Ability to effectively present to stakeholders ideas and technical information 
  • Ability to learn new software for communication, project management, and technical analysis
  • Past research experience funded by National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) or publications in peer-reviewed journals such as Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America (BSSA) or Earthquake Spectra.

USGS Mendenhall Program Post-doctoral Opportunity: Improving earthquake forecasting with machine learning

The USGS Mendenhall program has a post-doctoral opportunity (#22-36) for recent graduates in computer science, geophysics, seismology, statistics, or related fields.

The goal of this opportunity is to develop machine-learning approaches to improve earthquake forecasting capabilities – namely, to better predict the rate, locations, and sizes of earthquakes, and to supplement or potentially replace the empirical epidemic-type aftershock sequence (ETAS) models currently being used by the USGS for operational earthquake forecasting.  In their proposal, applicants should describe methods and architectures amenable to extracting relevant features from catalogs of earthquake times and locations, and to generating stochastic representations of future activity.

Postdoctoral position at University of Minnesota

I would like to announce an open postdoctoral position in the Rock and Mineral Physics Lab at the University of Minnesota.

This position is funded for 2 years as part of an NSF project on the rheological properties of gouge at elevated temperatures. A detailed project description can be found at

Expertise is sought in conducting rock-mechanics experiments at extreme conditions and/or micromechanical modeling of deforming, crystalline aggregates. A key focus of the project will be investigating the manner by which the macroscopic frictional properties of gouge depend on the combined influences of frictional contacts between grains, viscoplastic deformation mechanisms, and solid-state sintering.
