Shaping the Future with Researcher-Run Journals
Please join us pre-AGU for this 3-hour workshop where we will discuss startup and longevity planning for researcher-run Diamond Open Access journals.
When: Sunday, December 10, 2023, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM Pacific Time (UTC-07:00)
Where: 826 Valencia Mission Bay, San Francisco, California, USA
The Workshop will cover:
- Diamond Open Access basics
- The state of Earth Sciences publishing
- Open publishing tools - the Open Journal System, hosts + support
- Community building
- Media engagement and Branding strategies
- Building for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in science publishing
- Open data/code principles applied to journal design.
Participants can expect a crash course in journal-building and will be invited to contribute to a future-looking white paper representing how we, the global research community, would like to see funding agencies support Open Access.
The workshop venue is sponsored by anonymous donations to Seismica and there is no fee to participate. Refreshments will be provided. Limited to 50 participants.

Faculty position in critical zone science at Utah State University
I am excited to share that the Department of Geosciences and the Ecology Center at Utah State University (USU), Logan, invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in interdisciplinary Critical Zone Geosciences, anticipated to begin August 2024.
We seek candidates who conduct innovative, interdisciplinary, and quantitative investigations across a broad range of critical zone (CZ) processes linked to societal importance. Disciplinary expertise may include but is not limited to understanding CZ processes involved in bedrock weathering and soil production, ecological impacts of mineral dust, geomicrobiology, carbon cycling and sequestration, pathways of water, and responses to climate change and human impacts.

The position involves academic research (50%), graduate and undergraduate teaching and mentoring (40%), and service (10%) to the academic community. The position includes a 25% appointment in USU’s Ecology Center. Successful candidates will demonstrate potential for excellence in research and scholarly leadership through development of a dynamic, externally-funded research program. We are especially interested in candidates committed to advancing access and opportunity in the geosciences.

Submit a Session Proposal to SSA 2024
Join your colleagues next Spring in Anchorage, Alaska at the SSA 2024 Annual Meeting.
Led by Co-chairs Carl Tape and Michael West, University of Alaska Fairbanks, the meeting will be a dynamic week of in-person collaboration, learning and networking.
Session Proposal Deadline: 30 September, 5 p.m. Pacific
Shape the SSA Annual Meeting by submitting a session proposal. We are seeking session proposals from across the fields of geotechnical and earthquake engineering, earthquake science and seismology.
SSA encourages all conveners to assemble a diverse group of co-conveners. Early-career members are encouraged to submit session proposals. Take the career-advancing leap and begin reaching out to collaborators today!
A few key policies:
- Session proposals should include conveners from at least two institutions.
- Every session is required to have at least one non-U.S. government co-convener.
- Submissions require a session name, a short description of the session and the name, affiliation and contact information of at least two conveners.

Louise H. Kellogg Endowed Chair in Geophysics
The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of California, Davis, seeks an outstanding faculty member for the Louise H. Kellogg Endowed Chair in Geophysics. This chair will be appointed at the associate or full professor levels and is open to applicants from all areas of Earth and planetary geophysics.
The Louise H. Kellogg Endowed Chair in Geophysics honors the memory of an inspiring scientist, mentor, and leader, dedicated to increasing equity, inclusion, and diversity throughout the scientific community. The appointee is expected to develop and maintain a vigorous externally funded research program, to engage students through teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and to provide visionary leadership that enriches and expands scientific excellence in the geophysics community and beyond.
The successful candidate will be appointed as an academic year (9 month) tenured faculty at the appropriate level and must have a Ph.D. or equivalent in Earth and planetary sciences or a related field, and a least 5 years of relevant professional experience following award of the Ph.D.
