Job Description: The Nevada Seismological Laboratory (NSL) at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for a full-time (9-month, tenure track) Professor / Director Nevada Seismological Laboratory.  The Director of NSL will lead a world-class seismology research organization and contribute to reducing earthquake risk through fundamental science research, regional earthquake monitoring, and public service. Reporting to the Dean of the College of Science, the Director will have the vision and initiative to enhance an already thriving environment of education and innovative research in seismology and geophysics, in areas including earthquake monitoring and hazards, artificial intelligence and big data, earthquake physics and rupture processes, engineering and computational seismology, earthquake geodesy, and seismotectonics.

The NSL operates a prominent regional seismic network as part of the USGS Advanced National Seismic System and is the statewide agency designated to provide earthquake information to the public and to first-responders.  The NSL director oversees a regional network of over 200 broadband and strong motion stations that span Nevada and areas of eastern California and operates its own high-throughput data communications system.  NSL operations include research and strategic partnerships with Department of Energy laboratories and the Nevada National Security Site, as well as energy and mining companies throughout the state.

The Laboratory disseminates seismic information to the public and regularly publishes research results. It serves as a data repository and a resource for the public on matters related to earthquake activity and earthquake risks in Nevada and adjoining states. The laboratory also handles grant- and contract-supported research on seismic problems of national and international importance, and interacts closely with the University of Nevada Reno (http://www.unr.edu) Department of Geological Sciences and Engineering (https://www.unr.edu/geology) to prepare well-educated professionals for careers in seismology.

On behalf of Jean-Paul Ampuero, Geoazur

PhD position in probabilistic thermo-hydro-mechanical modeling of induced seismicity on rough faults

Background and research project: Earthquakes can be caused by human activities related to renewable energies and to the energy transition that are critical to address climate change. This PhD project focuses on seismicity induced by cold fluid injection during geothermal production and carbon capture and gas storage. The project objectives are:

  1. To develop a simulation framework that integrates careful modeling of both induced stresses and earthquake ruptures, including the role of temperature changes.
  2. To characterize the role of spatial heterogeneities in fluid-injection-induced seismicity. We willfocus on the most constrained spatial heterogeneities, those caused by fault roughness.
  3. To quantitatively integrate model uncertainties into a probabilistic hazard assessment workflow, producing an ensemble of model realizations constrained by observations (e.g. seismicity catalogs and satellite remote sensing) through data assimilation methods.

More background: https://bit.ly/40QYXFE

Position description and host teams: This PhD will be supervised by Jean-Paul Ampuero (Geoazur) and Thibault Candela (TNO). The position is primarily based at Geoazur (Nice, France), in its Earthquakes Team, and involves multiple visits to TNO (Utrecht, The Netherlands). A PhD degree in Earth Science will be granted by Université Côte d’Azur upon fulfilling the requirements of its Doctoral School for Fundamental and Applied Sciences.

Geoazur is a large academic research laboratory (about 200 people) focused on Earth science. It is located in Sophia-Antipolis, a leading European technology park (2,500 companies and 4,500 researchers) in between the Mediterranean Sea and the Maritime Alps mountains. Geoazur is part of Université Côte d'Azur (UCA) and Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur (OCA) and is also affiliated to CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) and IRD (French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development).

TNO is the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research and acts as the Geological Survey of the Netherlands with the legal mission to make information on the Dutch subsurface available to Dutch society to enable the sustainable use and management of the subsurface and its mineral resources. TNO uses subsurface data to understand the Thermo-Hydro-Mechanic-Chemical dynamic interaction with a wide variety of applications: hydrocarbon production, storage of gas, CO2 and energy, and disposal of radioactive waste. A total of about 200 employees work in the geoscience domain at TNO.

Application procedure: To apply to this PhD position, send by April 30 2023 your motivation letter, CV, contact information of 2 references, and undergraduate and masters transcripts and grades by email to J.P. Ampuero and T. Candela (ampuero<at>geoazur.unice.fr, thibault.candela<at>tno.nl).

Opportunity to Lead the Earthquake Monitoring Project at the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, CA

The U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Science Center (ESC) is hiring a Supervisory Geophysicist to lead our Earthquake Monitoring Project. This important and influential permanent position is offered at the GS-14 level (salary range $144,017 to $183,500 / Per Year).  The mission of the ESC is to reduce seismic risk by conducting basic and applied research on earthquakes and their effects.

This position is located in Menlo Park/Moffett Field, California, within the Earthquake Science Center (ESC). This person will serve as the Project Leader for the Earthquake Monitoring Project (EMP), and will be responsible for many of the earthquake monitoring activities within the ESC. The EMP oversees the operation of the Northern California Seismic Network, the National Strong Motion Network, a cache of rapidly deployable aftershock recording systems and the associated data acquisition and processing systems.  The EMP collaborates with the UC Berkeley Seismological Laboratory on earthquake monitoring in Northern and Central California, contributes to the observations of California volcanoes, and is part of the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System. These networks and associated processing systems are designed to: ensure reliable, on-scale recording of earthquakes; to compute seismological and engineering parameters for earthquakes within seconds of their occurrence automatically and accurately; to deliver timely information to the public and emergency response agencies; and to archive data, data products, and metadata for the benefit of the seismological research and engineering communities.

This position provides an opportunity for a leader interested in public service, and having a strong scientific and geophysical network background, to guide the USGS’s earthquake monitoring efforts and lead advancements in the field.

As a Supervisory Geophysicist and Earthquake Monitoring Project Leader within the Earthquake Science Center, your duties will include:

  • Serves as the Project Leader for the Earthquake Monitoring Project;
  • Ensures the EMP meets its operational goals and coordinates the rapid and reliable delivery of seismic data and earthquake products to state emergency-services agencies, and cooperating networks of the California Integrated Seismic Network (CISN) and the Advanced National Seismic System;
  • Provides administrative direction over project goals, activities, and functions, including managing budgets, personnel supervision, purchasing property, and permitting. Oversees a group of about 30 scientists, engineers, technicians, IT professionals, and computer scientists, and supervises 4-8 direct reports;
