SCEC CFM5.3 Evaluation Workshop

Conveners: Scott T. Marshall, Andreas Plesch, John H. Shaw
Dates: April 7, 2022
Location: Online

SUMMARY: The Community Fault Model (CFM) is one of SCEC’s most established and widely used community resources (Plesch et al., 2007; Plesch et al., 2020; Nicholson et al., 2020), with applications in many aspects of SCEC science, including crustal deformation modeling, wave propagation simulations, and probabilistic seismic hazards assessment (e.g., UCERF3). As we enter the final stages of SCEC5, the time has come to conduct a community evaluation of the current model, CFM5.3.

The purpose of this virtual workshop (via Zoom) is to provide some background on the CFM, introduce and demonstrate the web-based evaluation tool, and to demonstrate the relevant and useful CFM web tools. If you are interested in serving as an evaluator, or have questions, please contact Scott Marshall for more information.

EVALUATION PLAN: The CFM5.3 evaluation will be performed individually by each evaluator and will focus on individual or groups of faults where significant differences in interpretation exist. Since its inception, the SCEC CFM has contained a series of alternative representations for many of the faults in southern California. These alternatives often reflect a different degree of detail within the fault representations, based on incremental improvements in the quality of the seismologic constraints and/or degree of details in surface fault traces used to construct the 3D fault surfaces. Other alternative fault representations describe fundamental differences in interpretation, including the length, dip, and dip direction of these structures. Contrasts between these alternatives can have a major influence on fault mechanics and hazard, as they yield different fault areas, depths, and degrees of connectivity with surrounding fault systems. The CFM5.3 evaluation will focus on alternative representations where significant differences exist. To do this, we have assembled a team of volunteer evaluators with a wide range of expertise.

Evaluation files are linked through the web-based survey. Users of the Gocad software package can find the evaluation files in this 140MB ZIP file.
