2. 2019 Green Scholar Postdoctoral Fellowships:
------------------------------------------------------------------

The Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography has openings starting in 2019 for two postdoctoral Green Scholars. Funding from the Green Foundation for Earth Sciences is matched with extramural funds for specific research projects to support these positions. Prior to submitting an application, applicants should contact potential IGPP mentors to check whether they have a viable project. Positions are available for one year and are renewable for a second year, subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds. Green scholars are encouraged to broaden their experience through interaction with other researchers at IGPP and individual research goals may be pursued if project progress can be maintained. Information on recent IGPP research is available here.

Applications should include a statement of research interests (1 page), dissertation abstract (less than 250 words), curriculum vitae with publications list, immigration status, and contact information for two recommendation letter writers. Applications should be submitted online here.
Applications should be submitted by February 15, 2019. Review of applications typically takes 2-3 months. Applications may be accepted until the position is filled, but full consideration is not assured if all materials are not received by February 15. Letters of support should not be submitted with the application; we will solicit letters after a first round of evaluation. Please address questions to greenfound@ucsd.edu.
UC San Diego is an Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) employer and welcomes all qualified applicants. Applicants will receive fair and impartial consideration without regard to race, sex, color, religion, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, genetic data, or other legally protected status.

3. Postdoctoral Fellow Positions Available at Berkeley Seismology Lab:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear SCEC Community,

Postdoctoral Fellow Positions Available at UC Berkeley Seismology Lab

Earthquakes, machine learning, real-time seismology and next-generation seismic networks

Postdoctoral fellow positions are available at the UC Berkeley Seismology Lab to work on earthquake source problems. The group in particularly interested in the application of machine learning in seismology, with a focus on real-time seismology and the use of massive, diverse datasets including the MyShake global smartphone seismic network.

MyShake is an effort to harness personal/private smartphones to detect and study earthquake sources, while at the same time providing hazard reduction strategies to the users in the form of earthquake alerts and education. The MyShake network is expanding with a completely new version of the app and a range of additional services coming spring 2019.

The postdoctoral fellow(s) would work on one or more problems in this domain. These could include earthquake source studies ranging from detection of small magnitude (M1.0) events beneath urban areas to imaging of large magnitude ruptures. Also, real-time detection and characterization of earthquakes including earthquake early warning, and rapid assessment of earthquake impacts such as dense microzonation studies and building response detection.

The initial appointment would be for one year. Reappointment for a second and possibly third year is typical but dependent on satisfactory progress.

For more information please contact Prof. Richard Allen [rallen@berkeley.edu] (who will be at AGU) and/or Dr. Qingkai Kong [kongqk@berkeley.edu].

Applications will be reviewed as they are received and continue until the position(s) are filled. Applicants should send a letter detailing their research interests and its relevance to this topic, and a CV to Prof Allen and Dr Kong at the above email addresses.

Thanks.

best
Qingkai

4. USGS Mendenhall Post-Doctoral research opportunity: Geophysical characterization of critical mineral and geothermal resources and processes in the western US:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear friends and colleagues:

We would like to call your attention to a new USGS Mendenhall Post-Doctoral research opportunity: Geophysical characterization of critical mineral and geothermal resources and processes in the western US. Details about the position are available at https://geology.usgs.gov/postdoc/opps/2019/17-33%20Ponce.htm

For this Research Opportunity we seek candidates who will contribute much needed improvements to potential-field and electrical resistivity models currently being used to evaluate mineral and geothermal resources in the western US. We encourage research to identify and define areas favorable for mineral and geothermal resources, hydrothermal alteration, and subsurface fluid flow. Current areas of interest include: critical rare earth element (REE) mineral investigations in the southeast Mojave Desert, California; and critical lithium, tungsten, and geothermal resource investigations in the basins of the Owens River drainage system and the Salton Sea area, southern California

Applicants have latitude in the proposed research topic, geographic scale, and geophysical methods to be used. The application deadline is February 1, 2018, and the proposed duty station is Menlo Park, California. Application instructions are provided at http://geology.usgs.gov/postdoc/opps/basics.html. Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the advisors (listed below) early in the application process to discuss project ideas.

Research Advisor(s): David Ponce (650) 329-5314, ponce@usgs.gov; Jonathan Glen (650) 329-5282, jglen@usgs.gov; Jared Peacock (650)329-4833, jpeacock@usgs.gov; Victoria Langenheim (650) 329-5313, zulanger@usgs.gov; Lisa Stillings, (775) 784-5803, stilling@usgs.gov; and David John, (650) 329-5424, djohn@usgs.gov.

5. Postdoctoral position at Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (SIO):
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Postdoctoral Scholar Position
Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics
Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, CA

Early onset postseismic deformation

The Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography has an opening for a postdoctoral scholar. The candidate will work with other researchers, graduate students and programmers on a NASA-funded project, “The early phases of the crustal deformation/earthquake cycle from GNSS and complementary Earth observation datasets: Implications for earthquake and tsunami hazards.” The objective is to improve our understanding of the underlying physics of crustal deformation and the earthquake cycle, focusing on early onset postseismic deformation, through models of time-dependent fault zone processes.

Candidates should have demonstrated experience in modeling crustal deformation with the potential for independent, creative research. Proficiency in high-level computer programming and visualization is an advantage.

Candidates are required to have completed the PhD degree prior to taking up the appointment.

The position is now open for a one-year period, with an option for an additional one-year, dependent on funding and performance. It includes a minimum stipend of $52,896 plus benefits (higher for applicants with postdoc experience). Appointees are eligible for health insurance through UC San Diego.

Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Please e-mail a CV, two references and a letter of research interests to ybock@ucsd.edu.
