Job Opportunity Studying Induced Seismicity at the U.S. Geological Survey
The U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Science Center (ESC) in Menlo Park, California, seeks a Geophysicist to analyze and conduct research on seismic network data collected at sites of suspected induced seismicity associated with deep underground fluid injection or production. This will be a permanent position at the GS-9 or GS-11 level. Primary duties will include: analysis of data collected from seismic networks maintained by the Induced Seismicity Project (e.g., pick phase arrival times, determine earthquake locations and focal mechanisms, etc.), conducting research to better understand the causes and consequences of induced earthquakes, assisting in field deployments of seismic networks, and monitoring the state of health of these seismic networks. The ideal candidate will have background knowledge in seismology or a related field and be interested in becoming a part of a multidisciplinary research group working to further our understanding of induced earthquakes.
Applications (resume and responses to application questions) for this vacancy must be received on-line via USAJOBS before midnight Eastern Time on Friday, November 28, 2014. Resumes must adhere to the format prescribed on USAJOBS, include detailed information for current and past jobs, and have full narrative descriptions of duties, responsibilities, knowledge, skills and abilities for past work experience. Please be careful to follow instructions and ensure that all supporting documents (e.g., transcripts) are included as a part of the application package. Probationary (Tenure Track) Faculty Position in Earthquake Hazards and/or Engineering Seismology
The Department of Earth Sciences invites applications for a probationary (tenure-track) position in the area of Earthquake Hazards or Engineering Seismology. The appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor. The starting date for the appointment is July 1, 2015.
Earthquake Hazards and Engineering Seismology are key areas of research strength at Western University, with faculty involved in research in earthquake processes and earthquake hazards, ground motions, and induced seismicity. Over the last 20 years, Western has established itself as the leading university in Canada in the field of Earthquake Seismology, through its long-term commitment to seismic monitoring (through the Southern Ontario Seismographic Network), seismic hazard research, and rapid earthquake ground-motion warning. Western has a demonstrated track record in working with industry to provide the infrastructure and research needed to manage seismic hazard issues. Vibrant long-term collaborations include those with the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction, Ontario Power Generation, and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization. This position builds upon these collaborations, and on the recent appointment of an NSERC/TransAlta/Nanometrics Industrial Research Chair in Induced Seismicity Hazards.
The applicant will have a Ph.D. or equivalent, and an established research record in Earthquake Hazards or Engineering Seismology, as evidenced by publications in scholarly journals, conference presentations, external grant funding, and interactions with industry partners or groups. Preference will be given to qualified applicants whose research focuses on ground motion and hazard issues having practical engineering applications. While all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply, applicants whose research involves collaboration with industry partners, and the development and effective use of seismographic network data, will be given priority.
The applicant must demonstrate the ability to supervise graduate students at the MSc and PhD levels and to teach in related Earth Science fields (e.g., Geophysics including Seismology) at the undergraduate level, as well as develop specialized courses in Earthquake Hazards or Engineering Seismology at the graduate level. The successful applicant will be expected to establish and maintain an original, vigorous, independently funded research program, to attract excellent students, and to collaborate with other faculty members in Science. Collaboration with other Faculties at Western, such as Engineering, is also encouraged. The successful applicant will also be expected to participate in administrative responsibilities in the Department and in the University.
The Department of Earth Sciences is a vibrant community of 25 full-time faculty members, 9 support staff, 106 graduate students, and 10 post-doctoral fellows, research associates and instructors. Research in the Department of Earth Sciences is organized into the broad themes of
Earth and Planetary Systems; Resource Geoscience; Tectonic Processes and Natural Hazards; and Earth and Climate Evolution. More information about the Department of Earth Sciences is available at: www.uwo.ca/earth/. Information on our research products related to this position may be found at: www.seismotoolbox.ca and www.inducedseismicity.ca.
Review of applications will commence on December 8, 2014 and continue until the position is filled. A complete application includes a cover letter, a full curriculum vitae, a detailed research plan (2 pages max.), a description of teaching philosophy and preference (2 pages max.), plus mail, email addresses, and phone/fax numbers of at least three referees, sent to:
Dr. R. Gerhard Pratt, Chair, Department of Earth Sciences, eschair@uwo.ca, Western University, London, Ontario CANADA N6A 5B7.
Positions are subject to budget approval. Applicants should have fluent written and oral communication skills in English. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. Western University is committed to employment equity and welcomes applications from all qualified women and men, including visible minorities, Aboriginal people and persons with disabilities.
