Session Description:
On August 24, 2014 a magnitude (M) 6.0 earthquake struck south of Napa, California. Damage estimates for this quake could reach $1 billion. This is the largest earthquake to occur in the populated San Francisco Bay Area since the M6.9 1989 Loma Prieta event. The event was recorded by much more dense and modern network of geophysical sensors compared to previous events. Notably Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) systems provided an alert of imminent shaking in 5 seconds. This session will focus on geophysical and geological studies of the South Napa earthquake including source rupture process, seismological and geodetic observations, EEW, aftershock studies, earthquake geology, seismic hazard, earthquake effects, damage and sociological studies.
