Post-doctoral research position investigating the role of pore fluids in seismicity, earthquake source physics, and faulting
The USGS Mendenhall post-doctoral research program has an opportunity for fundamental and applied research on the role of pore fluids in seismicity, earthquake source physics, and faulting. The scope of the opportunity is broad, covering instances where fluids play a mechanical role in seismogenesis and faulting, such as induced seismicity, episodic tremor and slip, shear-heating-induced pore fluid pressurization and dehydration, natural fluid-triggered seismicity and earthquake swarms, and volcanic tremor, among others. Possible research approaches include observational seismology, geophysical imaging, experimental rock mechanics, volcano seismology, borehole geophysics, geomechanics, hydrology, theoretical studies, numerical modeling, and multi-disciplinary field-scale experiments.
Because of the sequester the position start dates are out of the normal Mendenhall cycle. This opportunity is for starting dates from January 2014 to mid September 2014.
