GSA Session T211: The Rock Record of Fault Rheology and Slip Dynamics
Date: 05/13/2013
Forwarded GSA Session announcement from Christie Rowe, McGill University:
Greetings all,
We are excited to announce a session for the Geological Society of America Annual meeting in Denver (Oct 27-30, 2013) http://community.geosociety.org/2013AnnualMeeting/Home/
T211: The rock record of fault rheology and slip dynamics
The established paradigm is that pseudotachylytes (frictional melts) provide the only certain evidence of paleo-seismic slip in faults exhumed from earthquake source depths (Cowan, JSG, 1999). In the past 14 years, however, we have learned more about fault behavior throughout the earthquake cycle. The current focus is on strength evolution over a range of slip rates and stress regimes and the role of dynamic vs. static slip rather than simply on slip velocity. New light has been shed on timescales of fault behavior, with the recording of tremor and episodic slip events both deeper and shallower than the seismogenic zone. Additional lines of geological evidence have been proposed which may provide direct evidence of this range of slip behavior. In this session we invite contributions addressing the geologic record of fault behaviors, through geological and geophysical observations and numerical and laboratory experiments.
Conveners: Christie Rowe, W. Ashley Griffith, Phil Resor, Darrel Cowan
Invited speakers: Joan Gomberg, Jack Loveless, Tom Mitchell
There are a lot of exciting structure & tectonics sessions planned for this meeting which we hope will attract new attendees to the GSA meeting: http://www.geosociety.org/meetings/2013/sessions/topical.asp?SponsorID=G...
Abstract submission for the meeting will close on 6 August.
Hope to see you in Denver!
