Postdoc position at University of Canterbury (NZ) in site response analysis of the Canterbury earthquakes

There is currently an opening for a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Canterbury to examine 3D effects and nonlinearity in site response analysis for the Christchurch earthquakes.  The postdoc position has a duration of 2 years and a salary equivalent to that of 1st year as Assistant Professor.
 
The application deadline is 30 April, but people that will potentially finish their PhD in the next 6 months would certainly be considered.  A technical summary of the project is given below.
 
Seismic site response analyses of the alluvial sediments in the Canterbury basin will be performed for the major four earthquakes in the Canterbury earthquake sequence (4 Sept 2010, 22 Feb 2011, 13 June 2011, 23 Dec 2011). The simulations will involve 3 dimensional sedimentary basin stratigraphy and nonlinear soil behaviour modelling, and will enable a fundamental understanding of the salient factors which resulted in the ground motions and consequent damage observed during these earthquakes, in particular, the critical role of systematic site effects. The simulations will be validated by an unprecedented dataset of near-source strong motion stations as well as post-event reconnaissance fieldwork documenting the spatial extent and severity of liquefaction, and damage to structural and geotechnical systems. Emphasis will be placed on interpretation of the analysis results for use in earthquake engineering, both for future site-specific studies, and also the treatment of site effects in seismic design guidelines.
