Date: 10/17/2012
Forwarded post-doc opportunity from Michele Cooke, UMass:
Department of Geosciences at University of Massachusetts Amherst
Post-Doctoral Position – Fault Mechanics
We seek a fault mechanics expert to investigate the growth of faults. This 2-year project will use numerical models to assess the work budget of fault growth at the microcrack scale and will parameterize the micro scale controls on fault growth in order to simulate laboratory and crustal fault propagation. Position could be extended beyond the 2nd year pending funding. The appointee will work with Michele Cooke (cooke@geo.umass.edu) to develop the models and to compare results to laboratory and field observations.
The successful applicant should have skills in fault mechanics, numerical modeling, as well as laboratory experiments or field mapping of faults. Experience with computer programming is a plus. A PhD in geomechanics or related field is required. The appointee will be expected to participate in a variety of dissemination activities including presentation at meetings and publication of results. Starting salary is expected to be $40,000 -$45,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The priority deadline for applications is November 1, 2012, but the position will remain open until filled. Please include a CV, a brief research statement and names and emails of three references. Electronic applications (preferred) can be submitted as a single PDF file to lorna@geo.umass.edu. Paper applications can be sent to Fault Mechanics PostDoc, Dept. Geosciences, UMass – Amherst, 611 North Pleasant ST, Amherst MA 01003-9297.
