Two AGU session announcements
Date: 07/27/2012
Dear SCEC Community,
The deadline for the 2012 AGU Fall Meeting abstract submission is fast approaching (August 8). Below are two more session announcements we have received for distribution.
If you plan to attend AGU, please take a moment to review these announcements and consider submitting an abstract to one or both of them.
Thanks!

=========== Session S002 ===================
Are Seismicity Patterns and Scaling Laws Universal?
The flow of earthquakes is effectively described by a set of empirical statistical relations that include the Gutenberg-Richter, Omori-Utsu and Bath laws, among others. It is commonly assumed that these laws are universal on regional or global scales, with variability within the statistical margins of error. Recent observational evidence and theoretical results challenge the universality assumption in favor of particular patterns and parameters of scaling laws that depend on key physical properties of the crust. This session calls for observational, theoretical and experimental results aiming to understand the limits to universality of seismic patterns and laws, and clarify their relations with other geophysical observations.

Complex Networks in Geosciences
Many complex systems and processes in nature can be represented as networks or graphs and, thus, analyzed using tools from complex network theory. This allows a general characterization of the origin, structure and dynamics of such systems and provides insight on a fundamental level making it well-suited for solving long-standing problems in geosciences. This includes but is not limited to pattern formation, environmental dynamics, and prediction of extreme events in seismology, hydrology, atmospheric and space sciences. The session goal is to showcase the potential of complex networks and to solicit a range of contributions focused on network ideas across disciplines in order to facilitate the knowledge exchange between different scientific communities.
