2011 SCEC Intern Program Announcements

Date: 12/15/2010

Dear Members of the SCEC Community,

After a very successful summer we are looking forward to the 2011 SCEC Intern Program. We would like to share a few announcements and requests related to the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) and the Undergraduate Studies in Earthquake Information Technology (UseIT) intern programs.

1. 2011 Intern Program online application -- available after 15 December 2010 at: www.scec.org/internships

Please share this information with your undergraduate students. I've also attached a copy of our 2011 program flyer.

2. Call for SURE Mentors:

We looking for mentors who have potential summer research projects that will allow students to conduct field, laboratory and theoretical research in the fields of geophysics, earthquake geology, seismology, tectonics, and geodesy.

Examples of previous projects are found at: http://www.scec.org/education/college/internships/projects/SURE/

To submit a proposal for a potential project, sign on to your SCEC CIS account and complete the online form under "Application for Mentors." Although you may not yet be certain whether you will receive SCEC funding, please submit the descriptions anyway. Our goal is to give intern program candidates an idea of the types of opportunities in summer 2011.

3. Special request for the USEIT program:

We are looking for students that are majoring in science, technology, engineering, or math that also have background in film, media, or related studies. Every year we produce a USEIT film that documents how the interns address the program's "Grand Challenge." This would be a unique experience for students with an interest in STEM communication and want to have some hands-on experience.

If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at: degroot@usc.edu

Thank you again for your continuing support of the SCEC Internship Programs. We look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Robert Michael de Groot, Ph.D.
