REMINDER: Nominations for SCEC Honorary Lectureships

Date: 01/31/2010

SCEC Board...

We've received 10 nominations for the 2010 SCEC Honorary Lectureships.

We need a few more early-career scientist nominations, though more nominations in general are welcomed.

We will discuss these tomorrow morning, so if you have any suggestions please send them today if possible. Just answer the questions below.

Thanks!

Mark

Dear SCEC Leadership,

We are seeking your nominations for three SCEC scientists to receive “SCEC Honorary Lectureships" for the 2010-2011 Academic Year. Self-nominations are encouraged. We need your suggestions by January 31 (Sunday) to be reviewed at the SCEC board meeting on Monday morning.

This new program will support the awardees to each give three talks at SCEC institutions or elsewhere about their research, between August 2010 and July 2011. In addition, they will be provided a set of slides about SCEC to include in their talk. The goal is to expand awareness of SCEC research and of the SCEC Community. Travel costs will be provided as well as a stipend for early-career participants. Awardees will be encouraged to spend a day or two at the institutions to talk to faculty and students in addition to the talk.

Nominees should be active in SCEC (in the last 3 years they should have attended at least 2 SCEC Annual Meetings, and submitted at least one SCEC proposal). SCEC leaders and established scientists, as well as early-career researchers, are all eligible.

To nominate someone (or yourself) please provide quick responses to the following questions:

1) Who are you nominating? (name, institution)

2) Does this person have exceptional presentation skills?

3) How is their research of interest to a broad yet technical earth science (or engineering) audience? (Would their talk be appropriate for your departmental seminar series?)

4) How is their research representative of SCEC's research objectives and reflective of the SCEC Community?

Thank you for your recommendation(s)!

Mark
