Icequakes: Position available at SIO/UCSD

Date: 06/17/2008

Forwarded from Helen Amanda Fricker, UCSD:

We seek to fill a position at either the Graduate Student or Postdoctoral Researcher level to work as part of a multi-institutional team consisting of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), the University of Chicago, Northwestern University and USGS. The successful applicant will work at SIO, part of the University of California, San Diego. The position will involve comparing seismicity originating from a variety of glaciated environments. The chosen candidate for this position will work on several different aspects of the project including: developing techniques for measuring ice fracture and iceberg calving rates using passive seismological observations in different glaciological environments (we have field data from the Amery Ice Shelf and Columbia Glacier); (2) develop algorithms for classifying different icequake sources based on waveforms, waveform spectra and source inversions; (3) Use similarities and differences in ice-related seismicity to learn about different ice fracture processes that occur within each environment. There is ample room for steering the projection direction with the candidates research interests. Ideally, the candidate will have a geophysics background with experience in seismology and interest in glaciology and/or near surface processes. Subject to the interests of the successful candidate, there will also be opportunities to work on other glaciology related projects. Salary will be determined by the University commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on the University of California pay scale, plus benefits. UCSD is an equal opportunity employer. Starting date is negotiable, but ideally the candidate would be available to start before the end of 2008. The position is for one year, with renewal for a second year by mutual agreement. Applications should be sent electronically (application letter, CV and a list of three referees) to Helen Amanda Fricker (hafricker@ucsd.edu) by July 18th, 2008. A brief notice of intent of application before this date would be appreciated.
