Summary
The selected applicant will manage seismological aspects of the production and distribution of various products generated by the Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN/CISN) and the Southern California Earthquake Data Center (SCEDC) at Caltech. The applicant's responsibilities will be to ensure that all seismological aspects including quality control of the products and timely and reliable delivery are properly addressed. The applicant will manage staff as well as interact with users to ensure that the products meet accepted standards. We are interested in individuals who like hands on work in a dynamic environment, and who would like to apply their management and computer skills to enhance the quality and delivery of earthquake information from the SCSN and SCEDC to researchers as well as the public.
Job Duties
Lead routine operations for the seismological aspects of the SCSN and SCEDC products. Such products include but are not limited to completeness and quality of waveform archive and associated metadata, earthquake catalog, ShakeMaps, ShakeMovies, and moment tensors. Lead the improvement of existing and the implementation of new seismological algorithms to facilitate real-time analysis of SCSN/CISN earthquake data, including quality control and product reliability. Manage post-processing data analysis efforts, including data quality monitoring and calibration of local and statewide seismological parameters.
Engage and manage SCSN and SCEDC staff in developing and implementing innovative approaches to improve the efficiencies, performance, and seismological aspects of the SCSN and the SCEDC, which provide earthquake information both for seismological and engineering research, emergency managers, and the public. Interact with user communities such as the Southern California Earthquake Center to facilitate the use of SCSN products for research.
Participate in special projects such as development of ultra-rapid source identification or earthquake early warning, and other projects that will use the SCSN as a research tool.
Assist with project management for SCSN and SCEDC contracts, including determining task priorities, assigning tasks, prepare and execute budgets of the operations, and monitoring progress to meet project deadlines. Take an active part in staff hiring, motivating, coaching, and conducting performance evaluations. Supervise outside contractors, including writing specifications for tasks. Prepare written reports, presentations, and assist in preparing proposals.
Minimum Requirements
The ideal candidate will have a BS or MS degree in geoscience or engineering and at least 5 years of experience participating in comparable technical projects. Familiarity with one of the areas relevant to SCSN, such as seismology, seismic instrumentation, software development, computer hardware, or IP data communications is also necessary. Demonstrated skills in seismic data processing, scientific applications programming, or administration of computer hardware. Excellent people skills are a must.

The qualified candidate should have an active interest in seismology, innovation, new products, and incorporating new efficiencies into the operation. The candidate must enjoy the challenge of leadership and motivation of staff, and have the ability to supervise a staff with a wide range of expertise. Excellent writing and communication skills and a high level of initiative are required. Knowledge of seismology and seismic instrumentation is desirable.
