GIS Geoscience Analyst/Developer
The School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University (http://sese.asu.edu/) is seeking an experienced GIS Analyst/Developer to run a GIS/Remote Sensing Laboratory to facilitate research and educational activities that cross disciplinary boundaries within the school.
Duties and Responsibilities
-Database management: maintaining and augmenting a growing database of climatic, geologic, topographic, and geophysical raster and point cloud data sets
-Software development: customization and automation of GIS applications (ESRI products) and Remote Sensing applications (ENVI, IDL, PCI Geomatica) to facilitate research activities; maintain and update existing ArcGIS Add-on VB and AML scripts.
-Support diverse research efforts: work with graduate students, postdocs, and faculty to develop and enhance GIS and Remote Sensing applications in their research and teaching, including basic training and development of novel applications.
-Support educational activities in the school: assist faculty in development and implementation of GIS-based projects in various courses, including digital field mapping.
-Develop internet-based mapping applications to facilitate access to community datasets and for research and education outreach.
Desired Qualifications
-Geoscience background or experience and experience working in an academic research and education environment is preferred.
-Expertise with ESRI products (Arc/Info, ArcGIS, ArcSDE, ArcIMS/ArcGIS Server), including customization/automation with VB and AML scripts, and image/data processing and visualization software (e.g., ERDAS Imagine, ENVI, PCI Geomatica, Matlab. PolyWorks, Fledermaus)
-Strong programming skills (e.g., VB, C++, MATLAB, Python, IDL, and/or Java)
-Fluency with both Windows and unix/linux-based platforms and strong scripting (perl or shell) skills.
-Strong organizational and communication skills.
In addition, the ideal candidate would have some or all of the following:
-Experience with geospatial metadata standards
-Knowledge of spatial database management systems (open source or commercial) such as PostGIS, Oracle spatial or DB2 spatial
-Knowledge of web service development and internet-based software
-Experience using common internet mapping resources (e.g. Google Maps API and Google Earth) to build internet-based mapping interfaces
