Research Position in Seismology at ETH Zurich, Switzerland

Date: 02/16/2007

The Swiss Seismological Service at ETH Zurich (www.seismo.ethz.ch) is soliciting applications for the position of research seismologist at a junior or senior level, with focus on studying induced seismicity. The objective is to study the mechanisms of induced seismicity related to geothermal field development and operation, in particular enhanced geothermal systems such as the currently ongoing Deep Heat Mining project in Basel. We are looking for a person interested in all seismological aspects of the creation and sustainable use of Enhanced Geothermal Systems, including basic research needs, monitoring and regulatory aspects.

Candidates must have a PhD in geophysics or a related field, expertise in practical and theoretical aspects of seismology and a proven record of excellence in conducting research. Expertise in one or several of the following domains is highly desirable: Monitoring and analysis of induced seismicity, earthquake location, probabilistic hazard and risk analysis, numerical modeling of fluid propagation and fluid-rock-seismicity interaction. The successful candidate will be expected to coordinate a growing research program at ETH, involving several researchers at ETH and with strong ties to other national and international partner institutions. He or she will participate in undergraduate and graduate level teaching at ETH and operational work at the Swiss Seismological Service, and supervise Master and PhD theses. English and German are working languages in the research groups.

For more detailed information, please contact Prof. D. Giardini, Dr. N. Deichmann or Dr. S. Wiemer. The selection process starts immediately, and will continue until the position is filled. The position is expected to have a minimum duration of 3 years, extension is a possibility. ETH offers a competitive salary, depending on experience and performance, as well as an excellent benefits package.
