Call for nominations for SCEC3 Planning Committee
Date: 03/30/2006
Dear Colleagues:
The SCEC Board of Directors has appointed a nominating
committee to recommend individuals to fill leadership positions
in the Planning Committee for SCEC3. The nominating committee
consists of: Greg Beroza (chair), Jim Rice, Lucy Jones, Bernard
Minster, and Doug Burbank. The SCEC Planning Committee is chaired
by SCEC's Deputy Director, Ralph Archuleta, and has responsibility
for formulating the Center's science plan, conducting proposal
reviews, and recommending projects to the Board for SCEC support.
Its membership includes the leaders of the major SCEC working
groups, disciplinary committees, focus groups, and special project
groups
The current leadership of the SCEC Planning Committee
is detailed in the attached table. The structure of the new
Program Committee will be similar, but with important differences,
described in the SCEC3 proposal (see http://www.scec.org/aboutscec/documents),
and the attached figure.
The proposal is to constitute three disciplinary groups:
Earthquake Geology, Tectonic Geodesy, and Seismology (down from
four in SCEC2), and 7 focus groups: Unified Sructural Representation,
Earthquake Source Physics, Crustal Deformation Modeling, Lithospheric
Architecture & Dynamics, Earthquake Forecasting & Predictability,
Ground Motion Prediction, and Seismic Hazard & Risk Analysis (up
from 6 in SCEC2). The SCEC Board is still mulling over the exact
names of these groups, but it is unlikely that the number will
change.
We are looking for two leaders for each group - a chair
and a co-chair. In all cases we are looking for broad-minded
individuals who can represent these specific areas within the
broader framework of the overall goals of SCEC. We are interested
in hearing about both individuals you would like to nominate for
specific positions as well as volunteers from those of you interested
in serving.
In making our recommendations to the Board, the nominating
committee will seek to balance the need for continuity with the
need for fresh leadership. We will work to maintain a healthy
diversity of viewpoints and backgrounds. We will also seek to
populate SCEC leadership positions with outstanding women and
minority scientists.
Our charge is to present a proposed slate to the board
soon enough that they can vote on it and invite the chairs and
co-chairs to the SCEC leadership meeting, scheduled for the first
week in June. Therefore, we we need your input promptly. We ask
that you provide it to us by Friday, April 14th. Please send it
directly to Greg Beroza (beroza@geo.stanford.edu).
Please note that the committee will treat all information
received with the strictest confidence and we urge you to do
the same.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Sincerely,
Greg Beroza (for the nominating committee)
