Workshop Announcement, SCEC-Turkey

Date: 01/27/2006

Dear colleagues,

We are making arrangements for a 3-day workshop to be held at Istanbul
Technical University, sometime between August 13 and 19, 2006.

We hope to attract a multidisciplinary group of scientists to discuss
strategies for comparative studies between the North Anatolian and the
San Andreas fault systems, with special emphasis on northwest Turkey and
southern California. Discussions will focus on recent findings (such as
evolution of transform basins, earthquake clustering, alternating seismic
activity between sub-parallel fault branches), and on developing
strategies for future studies. Participation of scientists from outside
the US and Turkey will be encouraged. We narrowed the dates to mid-August
because universities will not be in session and because it does not
conflict with other relevant meetings.

Travel funds for US participants have been requested in a SCEC proposal
(still pending), and we are now preparing a proposal to NSF-OISE (Office
of International Science and Engineering) to secure additional funds. We
are optimistic that both proposals will be funded. If this turns out to
be the case, we anticipate covering most of the travel expenses for the
US participants. This will be confirmed in June.

In order to finalize the NSF-OISE proposal, we must establish the level
of interest from the US community. Please e-mail a brief statement of
interest before the end of January to cormier@ldeo.columbia.edu. Any
suggestions for significant but still poorly understood problems to be
discussed at that workshop are appreciated. We will contact you later
with further details and the official application. A separate
announcement will be circulated by ITU to Turkish and international
scientists.

US participants do not need to have ongoing research projects in Turkey,
simply an interest to collaborate with Turkish scientists on
seismotectonic issues. Participation from graduate students, young
scientists, and underrepresented groups is encouraged. Please mark these
dates on your calendar and distribute this e-mail to anyone you think
might be interested in participating. We hope to see you in Istanbul in
August!
