Post-Doctoral Fellowships - AfricaArray (www.africaarray.psu.edu)

Candidates are sought to fill AfricaArray post-doctoral positions at The Pennsylvania State University (PSU), North Carolina Agriculture and Technology State University (NC A&T), and The University of the Witwatersrand. AfricaArray is an initiative to promote geophysics education and research in Africa by tightly coupling degree-granting programs at African universities with a Pan-African network of geophysical observatories, and to enhance diversity in the U.S. geosciences by offering opportunities for undergraduate science and engineering students at minority-serving institutions to participate in research and field work in Africa. Successful candidates will have opportunities to participate in planning and implementing a range of educational and research activities. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree at the time of appointment. The deadline for applications is November 1, 2005 but the positions will remain open until filled.

Post-doctoral position at PSU: Candidates should have a background in earthquake seismology and experience using broadband seismic data to image Earth structure. Field experience is advantageous but not essential, and applications from U.S. citizens are preferred, as stipulated by the NSF program funding this position. The successful candidate will have opportunities to participate in the installation and operation of seismic networks in Africa and to conduct research on imaging the seismic structure of the African crust and mantle. The initial appointment will be for 2 years (starting as soon as possible) with the possibility of an extension for up to 3 additional years. PSU is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer and applications from women and minorities are encouraged. Applicants for this position should email their CV, a statement of research interests, and contact information for at least three references to Andy Nyblade (andy@geosc.psu.edu) Department of Geosciences, Penn State University, University Park, PA.

Post-doctoral position at NC A&T: Candidates should have a background in seismology and a strong interest in building a career in geoscience education and in mentoring students from historically disadvantaged communities. The successful candidate will have a home appointment in the Physics Department at NC A&T, with opportunities to develop and teach undergraduate geoscience courses at NC A&T, to participate in seismological field work in Africa, and to conduct research for several months each year at PSU. Applications from U.S. citizens are preferred, as stipulated by the NSF program funding this position. The initial appointment will be for 2 years (starting as soon as possible), with the possibility of an extension for up to 3 additional years. NC A&T is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer and applications from women and minorities are encouraged. Applicants should email their CV, a statement of research/teaching interests, and contact information for at least three references to either Solomon Bililign (bililign@ncat.edu), Department of Physics, NC A&T State University, Greensboro, NC or Andy Nyblade (andy@geosc.psu.edu), Department of Geosciences, Penn State University, University Park, PA.

Post-doctoral positions at Wits: Positions are available for South African nationals and non-South Africans through funding from the South African National Research Foundation, with support at the super-Post doctoral level for South African nationals. The positions are open to candidates in all
areas of geophysics, with opportunities to participate in a wide range of research projects using data from the AfricaArray network, as well as from other sources. Successful candidates will join one of the premier Earth Science programs in Africa in the School of Geosciences at Wits. Appointments will be for two years, and candidates from historically disadvantaged communities are encouraged to apply. Applicants should email their CV, a statement of research/teaching interests, and contact information for at least three references to Paul Dirks (dirksp@geosciences.wits.ac.za), School of Geosciences, The University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.
